An Apple a Day Is Not Enough to Keep the Doctor Away

Article

Despite the common proverb, if you had a hope to stay healthy and happy till your 90s using just one apple, you were not on the right track. But let me help you!

Plants are our gut’s best friends, because plants contain fibers, and fibers feed our gut microbiome. In next week’s blog post I will explain how it works, but for now just believe me: if your gut is healthy, you will feel more motivated, full of energy, your skin would be better, you would have a regular bowel movement and less bloating. Most importantly, it can also prevent preliminary aging, many chronic diseases (even some types of cancer!), diabetes, Alzheimer, or Parkinson!

And yes, if you think your diet is already flawless: in Hong Kong, over 90% of people aged 15 or above do not eat enough fruit and vegetables! Are you still sure?

So, a quick guide for you if you want to live long and stay healthy: you may start with the 30 Plants Rule, or Eat The Rainbow Rule.

Main idea: you need to eat 30 types of plant food every week.

Explanation: the results of the American Gut Project, launched in 2012, showed that the gut microbiome content is much more diverse (and hence better) for people who eat more than 30 types of plants weekly.

What’s included: wholegrains (quinoa, oats, brown rice or even pasta!), fruits, vegetables, berries, legumes, herbs and spices.

How to track: you can leave your email below & we will send you a simple but cute tracker! You can print it out of use in its digital version, hence you will see if you have enough plant variety in your diet.

A little good news if you use our meal plan: in all of our meal plans, we make sure you’ve got MORE plants than needed, so you can stay effortlessly healthy!

Main idea: you need to eat fruits, berries and vegetables of each color of the rainbow.

Explanation: different colors of the fruit or veggie are linked to different kinds of vitamins and antioxidants, stored in these fruits. To get the full set of everything your body needs to stay healthy and forever-young, you should eat plant foods of every color.

How to track: personally, I just aim to buy something of each color every time I go grocery shopping (for example, red for tomatoes, orange for oranges, yellow for bell peppers, green for cabbage, blue for blueberries, and purple for eggplants). Easy!
